Life lessons from surgery have a way of cutting through everything that does not matter and bringing you face to face with what truly does. After my hysterectomy and bladder surgery due to fibroids, I found myself cracked open in the best possible way. Nothing like a major health event to strip you raw and remind you of what matters most.
Here is what surprised me: the surgery itself was the easy part. The real transformation happened in the days that followed, when I had no choice but to slow down and listen.
5 Life Lessons I Learned from Major Surgery
1. It Is Okay to Ask for Help
As a very independent person, this was new territory for me. I asked my friends, family members, clients, and even yoga students to pray for me and send healing energy. The response was overwhelming. I felt held in a way I had never allowed before. When you let people support you, you give them a gift too. You remind them that connection is what we are all here for.
2. Emotions Will Come Up (Let Them)
Fear, sadness, gratitude, grief, joy. Sometimes all within the same hour. The beauty of allowing emotions to flow is that they move through you. They do not get stuck. I cried when I woke up from surgery. I cried watching a sunset from my bed. I laughed harder than I had in months at the smallest things. This is what it means to be fully alive. We do not have to fear our emotions. When we let them move through us, we come out the other side clearer, lighter, and free to choose what we want to create next.
3. What You Allow Into Your Mind Shapes Your Reality
I looked to social media to give me the details on what to expect before and after surgery. There was a lot of encouraging, helpful advice and tips at first. Then I started seeing the complaining, the difficult experiences, the stories of depression afterward. As a Subconscious Change Facilitator, I know that the things we fill our heads with and choose to believe affect our reality. So I unfollowed those accounts and chose to focus on positive outcomes only. We get to choose what to believe. I chose: I feel great. I am healing more and more each day. My cells are vibrating with the power of healing energy.
4. Affirmations Are Medicine
The nutrients I am feeding my body are helping all my cells repair fully and optimally. I allow emotions to flow through me, easily returning to balance. I am grateful and thankful for my health, for the talented surgeons, for my friends and family. These are the statements I repeated throughout my recovery. They kept my mind focused on healing and my body responded. Your subconscious mind listens to every word you say. Choose words that support the outcome you want.
5. It Is a Reset
When you take time off due to illness, medical procedures, vacation, or even lose a job unexpectedly, it is time to reassess what is working and what is ready to shift. What type of person do you want to be when you return? What do you want to return to? Are there some changes that have been waiting for your attention? Surgery gave me permission to pause, reflect, and consciously choose my next chapter.
The Bigger Lesson: Life Cracks You Open for a Reason
Every breakdown is a setup for a breakthrough. Every pause is an invitation to realign. Whether you are recovering from surgery, navigating a life transition, or simply feeling like something needs to shift, these five lessons apply.
You get to choose what happens next. You get to decide who you want to be on the other side of this experience. And you do not have to do it alone.
