The Hidden Reason You Are Not Taking Action (And How to Change It)

If you are not taking action on the things you know you should be doing, the hidden reason is probably this: you have stopped trusting yourself. You let yourself down so many times. Knowing you should leave that job that has got you beyond the point of burnout, or leave the relationship that has been empty for over a decade. Knowing you should take better care of your health, but you do not follow through.

When you stop standing up for yourself and taking care of yourself, you stop trusting yourself. And without self-trust, action feels impossible.

A Real Story: When Waiting for Motivation Keeps You Stuck

Carly went from one marriage into another where she was disregarded and mistreated. She allowed her parents’ and her husband’s opinions about her life to rule, and worried about what her friends would think if she ever divorced her current husband. She was afraid that if she left, everyone would blame her.

I asked her how long she had been thinking about leaving. Her answer: years. She was waiting for a surge of motivation to generate enough energy to take action, as if the task itself could provide the drive to propel her forward. This never works.

7 Ways to Rebuild Self-Trust and Start Taking Action

1. Stop Numbing and Start Feeling

Pay attention to what you are reaching for when you want to avoid discomfort. Scrolling, snacking, shopping, staying busy. These are avoidance strategies. Sit with the discomfort for just five minutes. It will show you what you are really trying to escape from.

2. Develop Self-Trust Through Small Commitments

Set one small daily goal and commit to it. Drink a glass of water in the morning, make your bed, stretch for 5 minutes. Keep showing up, and your brain will start recognizing: I follow through. When you prove to yourself that you can keep a promise, trust builds.

3. Create Before You Consume

Every morning, do something creative before scrolling your phone. Write, doodle, play music, cook breakfast with care. Anything that puts you in the driver’s seat of your day instead of reacting to the world. Try morning pages: pour yourself a cup of coffee and write three handwritten pages of free-flowing thoughts first thing. It clears mental clutter and helps you reconnect with yourself.

4. Move Your Body, Shift Your State

Your body stores the emotions and beliefs that keep you stuck. Movement is one of the fastest ways to shift your state. Walk, dance, stretch, do whatever feels right. The point is to get out of your head and into your body.

5. Choose One Thing and Follow Through

Pick the one thing you have been avoiding the most. Break it into the smallest possible step. Do just that one step today. Then do the next one tomorrow. Momentum builds from micro-actions.

6. Get Support

You were never meant to do this alone. Whether it is a coach, a therapist, a trusted friend, or a community, having someone who sees you and holds you accountable makes all the difference.

7. Address the Root at the Subconscious Level

If you have tried all the surface-level strategies and you still cannot follow through, the block is subconscious. Beliefs like “I am not worthy,” “my needs do not matter,” or “it is not safe to change” run quietly in the background and override your conscious intentions every time.
