Why Getting Rid of Stress and Anxiety Is Only Half the Work

woman stressed and anxious

Most people come to me wanting stress and anxiety relief. They want to stop feeling overwhelmed. Stop the racing thoughts. Stop the constant tension in their body. And I get it. When you are drowning in stress, all you can think about is making it stop.

But here is what I have learned after over three decades of helping people transform: getting rid of stress and anxiety is only half the work. The other half, the half most people skip, is figuring out what you actually want instead.

The Question That Changed Everything

Ten years ago, I sat across from an emotional kinesiologist, spilling out everything that was wrong in my life. Stress. Anxiety. Arguments. Overwhelm.

He listened for a moment, then interrupted me. “Kelli, what does your perfect day look like?”

Without missing a beat, I said, “One where I am not anxious. One where I am not stressed. One where I am not arguing with my husband.”

He shook his head. “That is what you do not want. What do you want?”

And I sat there, completely blank. I had no idea. Even with his help, I struggled to describe it. I was so wired to focus on problems that imagining what I actually wanted felt impossible.

Why Removing the Negative Is Not Enough

You cannot just shut off stress, anxiety, and fear. That is only half the work. Your subconscious mind needs something to move toward, not just something to move away from. When you only focus on eliminating the negative without building the positive, you end up in a void. The stress may temporarily quiet down, but without a clear vision of what you want, it always comes back.

Think of it this way: if you pull weeds from a garden but plant nothing in their place, new weeds grow right back. You have to plant what you want to grow.

How to Discover What You Actually Want

1. Stop Describing What You Do Not Want

Pay attention to your language. Every time you catch yourself saying “I do not want to feel anxious” or “I do not want to fight anymore,” flip it. What DO you want to feel? What DO you want your interactions to look like?

2. Describe Your Perfect Day in Detail

From the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep, what does your ideal day feel like? How do you feel in your body? How do you interact with the people around you? What are you doing? Be specific.

3. Create a Goal Statement

Turn your vision into a single, clear statement. My client recently created hers: “I am focused on my healing rather than what is wrong.” That one sentence became her compass. Every decision, every thought, every action could be measured against it.

4. Install It at the Subconscious Level

This is where the real transformation happens. Using PSYCH-K®, we create visual, auditory, somatic, and symbolic cues so that your entire system can see, hear, know, and understand the changes you want to make. We rally both the logical left brain with the creative right brain so you can truly experience this new reality, bringing it closer to you.
