If Focusing on the Problem Worked, It Would Have Worked by Now

woman focusing on the problem

If focusing on the problem worked, it would have worked by now. You get what you focus on. And if you have been pouring all your energy into what is wrong, what hurts, what is broken, it is time to ask yourself: is this actually moving me forward?

When Problem-Focused Thinking Keeps You Stuck

I recently saw a client who is dealing with an autoimmune disease. It has been getting worse, and she has been getting the runaround from her doctors. She is exasperated, frustrated, and just wants to get to the bottom of it.

She realized that she had been so focused on feeling crappy and going from doctor to doctor that she had lost sight of what she actually wanted: to feel good and focus on her health.

That one shift in focus changed everything.

The Power of Shifting Your Focus

Together, we created her goal statement: “I am focused on my healing rather than what is wrong.” And then we did something most approaches skip entirely. We created visual, auditory, somatic, and symbolic cues so that her entire system, body and mind, could see, hear, know, and understand the changes she wanted to make.

Using a whole-brain process, we rallied both the logical left brain with the creative right brain so she could truly experience this new reality, bringing it closer to her. This is what it means to install a new belief at the subconscious level. It is not just positive thinking. It is rewiring your entire orientation toward life.

Why Positive Thinking Alone Falls Short

You might be thinking: “Is this just about being positive?” Absolutely not. This is about redirecting the immense power of your subconscious mind. When you focus on the problem, your subconscious finds more evidence of the problem. When you focus on the solution, your subconscious starts noticing opportunities, resources, and pathways that were invisible before.

The difference between positive thinking and subconscious reprogramming is the difference between putting a bumper sticker on a car and rebuilding the engine.

How to Shift from Problem to Possibility

1. Notice Your Language

How much of your daily conversation is about what is wrong? Start paying attention. Every complaint, every worry, every retelling of a problem reinforces it in your subconscious.

2. Create a Clear Goal Statement

What do you want instead? Not the absence of the problem, but the presence of something you desire. “I am focused on my healing.” “I am creating financial abundance.” “I am building a relationship that feels alive and connected.” Make it specific and present tense.

3. Engage Your Whole System

Your subconscious responds to imagery, sensation, sound, and symbol. When you create cues across all these channels, you give your brain a complete blueprint for the new reality you want to create.

4. Take Aligned Action

New beliefs need to be supported by new actions. Even small steps, getting to the gym, signing up for a class, having that conversation, build momentum and reinforce the shift.
